Ghosts from the past

This is a fanfic based off of Dave Pelzers, A Child Called It, The Lost Boy, and A Man Named Dave. These books are true stories based off of Pelzer's traumatic childhood. I decided to take the father character and create a fictional storyline based on his life  after he left Dave’s mother. This story isn’t told in the fathers perspective but is told from the perspective of the victim similar to Pelzer's books. In Pelzer's books the father is described as being a weak, frequently drunk father, who rarely stands up to Catherine Roerva Pelzer, his wife(the abuser in Pelzer's books) In my story because Stephen( the father) had no power in his previous marriage it leads to him seeking that validation and  becoming the abuser in his new marriage continuing the cycle of abuse he attempted to leave in his past.

Abilene-

I remember the day I realized my life wasn’t perfect. The happy life my parents pretended to live began to fade. It was like a wallpaper peeling off of a wall revealing all of its flaws. Everything was seemingly perfect; My parents had money, I went to a good school, and my parents had a ‘happy’ marriage. My dad was a firefighter and my mother was an attorney. They were successful and from an outsiders point of view we were perfect.

My mother pretended to be a vibrant, and happy woman. Then she changed, it was like the façade she had put up with for so long was eating away and she couldn’t take it anymore. When I was younger she covered up her bruises, she concealed her puffy eyes, and she always hid her agony with a smile. But she stopped hiding it, in a way it was like she stopped caring. Once that happened, she stopped protecting me.

My Dad started coming home drunk spending his days drinking instead of working. Month after month we had less and less money. When they couldn’t pay the bills he blamed me for needing food and new clothes. Day after day, week after week, and month after month he found a reason to blame us for his issues. Because my father inevitably found a reason to blame me for our money issues I tried not to ask for stuff but I couldn’t fit my freshman year clothes anymore. So when my Dad came home I made the dreaded discussion of asking for some money to buy clothes. When I asked he didn’t say anything he just looked at me in disbelief like I had some audacity to need new clothes after three years. Then he started screaming,

“ You know we don’t have money, why would you even ask?!” He seemed to be so enraged by my question. He raised his arm and slapped me. I felt his heavy hand lash across my face. I fell to the floor in shock. I knew my father was violent toward my mother but I never thought he would actually hit his own child. Tears began to stream down my face. I heard a large thud, my father had fallen to the floor, then I noticed he was crying. I was confused as to why. Then suddenly everything went black…

  1. Hm, I haven't seen fanfiction in a blog post before, so this was very interesting. I like your speculative angle on the father potentially turning from victim into perpetrator and therefore perpetuating the cycle of abuse, and your overall style; however, you seem to be doing more "telling" than "showing" right up until the last paragraph, making the action and the ending cliffhanger seem a bit jarring and unbalanced. Other than that, this was an overall enjoyable read. Well done!

Aesop Fables life lessons pt. 2

Last month I was captivated by Aesop's fables short stories mixed with life lessons. Because of how much I enjoyed the reading I decided to finish the book this month and I wanted to share with you some of the fables that stuck out to me. THE FOX IN THE WELL An unlucky Fox having fallen into a well was able, by dint of great effort, to keep his head barely above water. While he was there struggling, and sticking his claws into the side of the well, a wolf came by and looked in. "What my dear brother," said he, with concerned concern, " can it really be you that I see down there? How cold you must feel! How long have you been in? How did you fall in? I am so pained to see you. Do tell me about it!" " The end of the rope would be of more use to me than all your pity," answered the fox. "Just help me to set my foot once more on solid ground, and you shall have the whole story." saying well is good, but doing well is better -PG. 91  This is one ...

Book Recommendation: The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green, is a well written and captivating book. It follows the story of a teenage girl named Hazel. Years ago she was diagnosed with lung cancer, and she is already past her life expectancy. She has been spending her days sitting at home and watching bad tv, having been taken out of school several years ago. She attends a cancer support group from time to time, where she meets a boy named Augustus Waters. Pretty quickly they fall in love, and experience the ups and downs of life together. This book is great. It's funny, and I think it does a surprisingly good job at portraying the mind of a teenager. It's a good romance novel, and it does a great job at making you feel sympathy for cancer patients, but that isn't all its about, either. It's also a tragedy. It teaches a lesson that a lot happens in life that isn't fair. Suffering is inevitable, a part of life, a side effect. Not everything goes to plan, either, so when you find somethi...

The Future of Humanity

I have always loved the dystopian genre. I think what the author writes reflects how they view our world and what they think will come of it. Books like these have always captivated me as they transport my imagination into a potential version of the world I see today. This month I read Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and it led me to question how I believe the world will change in the future. Personally, I believe that unless the majority/ the entire human race changes our way of living we are going to destroy our earth. With that being said I also believe that our earth is on an undefined time limit, meaning that sooner or later our earth will end/ it won't exist anymore whether that is due to climate change and pollution or some other unidentified threat. In the maze runner there was a disease outbreak which eventually led to an apocalypse like world where there was a dictatorship and a rebellion. This view of how our world could unfold made me think about how human actions speci...
