It's funny how quickly a life can change in just mere seconds. It seemed like just moments ago Amari was playing with her brother now his lifeless body lay in her arms. They welcomed the strange men into their village with laughter and joy and all they were met with was death and destruction. Her parents were killed in the blink of an eye, Her village consumed in flames, and her life changed forever. Copper Sun is a spine shivering novel about 15 year old Amari who must navigate her way through the horrors of slavery. She must leave her past behind and never look back in order to survive her future. Throughout the book Amaris mental and physical strength is tested. She can never lose hope, even the people around her lose theirs. Even when the last withering flame from her past is extinguished she must never yearn for the past, a life she will never know again.
Copper Sun by Sharon M. Draper is a book that you feel in your heart, it sends shivers through your entire body, and plants a seed of fire inside of you. This novel is yet another testament to the exemplary writer. This intoxicating novel starts off by walking the reader through an average day of Amaris life, everything is normal until the slave traders arrive. The villagers open up their homes, they sing songs, dance, and exchange gifts. Everything was going good until the strange men started shooting the villagers, they killed Amaris family, and then they set her village on fire.
Amaris life as a free 15 year old to be married and live happily ever after ended that day. The slave traders abducted Amari, put her in chains, branded her, and shipped her off on a crowded ship like an animal. From that day on Amari must live her life as a person seen as nothing more than cattle on a farm. She must learn a new way of life in order to find freedom from the chains that bind her.
Draper tells this story in 3rd person which allows the reader to feel like they are right there with Amari. This perspective entices the reader into the story, and permits the reader to enter Amaris world in order to watch her develop as a person. I would 10/10 recommend this to anyone looking for a new independent reading book.

I really enjoyed the detail and word choice in your review! The book sounds intense and very interesting, and I'll have to check it out! You summarized the book really well; I liked how I could overall get the gist of the book without any huge spoilers or reveals. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThis seems like an amazing book. It appears to take a perspective not covered much outside of the history books, which is really important as the human connection allows us to empathize far more with given groups of people. I also really like that you juxtaposed Amari's earlier life as a carefree girl in her village with the grim fate of being a slave.
